16 years…wasted?

We settle into routines and well-worn paths of those before us and can become trapped. But what is possible if we get off the path and start something new?

I spent 16 years in my last job. It was a career filled with amazing experiences, growth, and development. I was surrounded by leaders of all levels who inspired and challenged me to reach my potential.

Looking back at my career, I am proud of all I accomplished, but I'm more proud of the courage and bravery it took to answer the call for change.

To leave a company after such a long tenure was downright terrifying.

I worried that I was making a huge mistake.

That I would be a failure on the other side, having to explain why I would give up the opportunity that I had

But the fear of not changing was worse for me, and as soon as I became aware it was time to change, it felt impossible not to answer the call.

Since I made my leap, it has not been easy, but it has been worth it.

I have embraced new discomforts that come with growth and stepping out of my comfort zone. I'm learning to stretch myself.

I also rediscovered parts of myself and the passions that I had put on the shelf for some distant future.

If you are in a place where the whisper of change may be in your ear, here are a few pieces of advice:

  1. Spend time in quiet reflection to get honest about where you want to make changes in your life, personally or professionally. Our world is noisy and filled with distractions. Carve out even 5 minutes of quiet to tune in and check in with yourself. I'm a huge fan of journaling for this process, and we created a journal for leaders to practice reflection and intentionality.

  2. Seek insights and advice from your trusted network. It's easy to get stuck in our heads, thinking and overanalyzing. Instead, talk it through with trusted friends, colleagues, and mentors. Often, they can see things in you that you may have forgotten or downplayed. Tapping into the insights of others is one reason we created a Leadership Mastermind so you don't have to navigate significant changes alone,

  3. Do it scared. When you decide to make a change, know that there will never be 100% certainty in any path (hint: if there is, you are probably playing it safe). Make up your mind, create and plan, embrace the courage to face your fear, and do it anyway. After all, everything you want is on the other side of fear.

What changes have you been seeking to make in your life?

Maybe this is the reminder you've needed to reassess your path and consider what changes may serve you long-term.

It can feel daunting and lonely, but you are not alone. You can do this, and we are here to support you along the way.
